Fire: Summer 2015

The room is quiet
apart from the A/C,
which would not be on
if I could open the windows,
but the air—for two weeks now—
is full of particles of Chelan and Omak
and mountain trees that believed
they would stand their whole lives
in one place,
never moving,
let alone flying
across rivers and cities
in clouds of exhaust
as slivers of carbon.
