Awakening

Living under the thumb
of a black walnut tree
it comes in October
that jolt
the fist, the walnut hull
bumping, bouncing off the roof.

You see the hand
of the hull in every bloody bang.
Between roots, dirt grows
only stones and vetch
despite all those
seeds.

Across the yard,
seedling rustle
and the throat-stung gasp
of sod breaking.
