Oak Tree with Cicada Damage

I found her staring out
from behind a blade of grass. Red-eyed surprise,
left behind her empty skin clinging

to the young oak. Now she’s reached her end—
has already deposited the next brood, nestled
in the tree’s vasculature. To nurture

is to be consumed. The tree shrugs
out of its own severed limbs.
