The Snow Angel (L’Ange de Neige)

In the bleak midwinter1
on the year’s coldest day,
an unwanted child was born.

Father prayed for a happy
accident, a miscarriage,
an abortion, an escape.

Mother simply prayed
for endurance, resigned
to melancholic motherhood.

The ties that bind bitterly
are a noose, choking
the infant marionette.

Farewell, sweet babe, farewell
‘Til some distant ‘morrow,
I am your future sorrow.


En plein hiver morne1
le jour le plus froid de l’année
un enfant non désiré est né.

Père a prié pour une heureuse
accident, une fausse couche,
un avortement, une évasion.

Mère simplement prié
pour l’endurance, résigné
à une maternité mélancolique.

Les liens qui unissent avec amertume
sont un nœud coulant, étouffent
la marionnette infantile.
